Cheriton Primary School

Curriculum

Vision:

At Cheriton Primary School, we aim to deliver a rich, ambitious and exciting curriculum that will provide every child with the learning they need to be fully prepared for the opportunities and challenges they may face in their future and in all that they aspire to do. We want every child to leave their journey at Cheriton as kind, passionate and curious individuals who have high aspirations for themselves and those around them.

Research shows that that too much new information will lead to cognitive overload of the working memory and that regular retrieval of learning ensures knowledge and skills can be committed to long-term memory. Our curriculum design is underpinned by this research, ensuring that the sequence of learning allows component knowledge to lead to conceptual understanding. Children are given opportunities to make connections across curriculum subjects and build on prior learning. This in turn encourages deeper thinking and interrogation of subject matter.

At Cheriton we have thoughtfully designed our schemes of work to ensure learning is relevant to our diverse group of pupils. We draw on the experiences, cultures and rich history of our community and local area to deliver bespoke learning that goes far beyond the National Curriculum. For us, curriculum design is a dynamic process whereby assessment informs future learning. It is important we have the space to let our curriculum evolve in order to meet all pupils’ needs; a curriculum that is equitable for all learners. We want to motivate our pupils to be responsive to the world around them, model good citizenship and be the change makers of the future.

We highly value our children's happiness in school and strive to nurture an enjoyment for learning and the skills needed to become independent, resilient and active learners. As well as academic achievement, our curriculum also offers a wide range of opportunities to develop the social and emotional wellbeing of our children, as well as growing in our understanding of SMSC (Spiritual Moral Social Cultural) and British Values.

Through all of this, we hope to inspire and create young people who will mature into lifelong learners with the confidence to embrace any challenges that their futures may hold.
