Child Initiated Activity

In the Foundation Stage we follow the belief that play is ‘essential for children's development, building their confidence as they learn to explore, to think about problems, and relate to others.’

Paragraph 1.8 of the statutory framework

Within the Foundation Stage we also aim to foster children's varied characteristic of learning by planning and guiding children’s choices of activities, ensuring they reflect the different ways children learn.

The statutory document outlines three characteristics of effective teaching and learning:

  • Playing and exploring: children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’.
  • Active learning: children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties and enjoy achievements.
  • Creating and thinking critically: children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.
